It just always felt more natural to me. I put commas where I would pause when I speak.

I work for a newspaper that follows the AP Stylebook, which does not use the comma. I’ve always hated it for the reason perfectly illustrated above. (I also hate that the Stylebook dictates that we do not use a date — as in July 22 — in a story or info box if the date in question falls within a week of the day it’s published. So if the article is published on, say, a Saturday, we’ll say an event is happening on Tuesday rather than July 28.)
